Branding through publicity and Understanding authentic story telling.

Having done publicity for over 15 years, it has become very clear that branding through publicity and raising your personal brand has come to the forefront. It has become more evident (and something I learned early on) that it is all about the story.


Lately, the more I see on social media, it seems to highlight the need to document, build and share your story. While this is true, I believe it goes much deeper than that and this is something that has started to bother me on a very tangible level. Everything in this business must come from a place of being real and authentic. One must actually have the credentials to back it up.


I have had and continue to have the privilege of working with some remarkable and diverse individuals many of whom have amazing talent but needed publicity; Then other individuals have had a taste of media but have wanted to raise their profile to another level. I have always been very particular about whom I choose to work with, assisting the client and asking the questions ‘why’, ‘what’ is the message and the story they want to share. Once the understanding, the ‘why’ and the motivation is clear, it then makes the journey of story telling easier to translate, using media and social media as the platform to share.


One of the main purposes of sharing stories, opinion pieces or business related articles from entrepreneurs whom have actually done something good and really added value to others, (whether it’s business lessons, understanding the #Hustle or sharing the tools with those who want to learn and apply them within their own businesses and lives) is that it is actually about showing what the possibilities are!


Some of the greatest examples, who also happen to be some of the greatest leaders we have today and my biggest motivators/Inspirations are: Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Sara Blakely, Oprah Winfrey, Gary Vaynerchuk,  Warren Buffet, JK Rowling. I have so much respect for all these incredible Entrepreneurs. All of these amazing individuals have something in common, their incredible story; their credentials to back up their story; their drive and their refusal to never give up. #TheyAllHaveAStory


I know that my passion as an entrepreneur and as someone that has the privilege of working with incredible individuals in different fields and industries, is to be able to use the media platform to help story-tell through online feature articles, print editorial, Radio and TV.


The significance and real value of branding through publicity is the viewership, readership and listener-ship. If a client really understands the value of what they are receiving the cost pales in comparison. One of the greatest and best leaders in this field and one of the most inspiring individuals, also known as the ‘King of Branding and Marketing, is Gary Vayerchuk. One of the biggest lessons I have learnt from Gary is that, if a client really understands the value of what you are offering them, they won’t question spending the money. If you have to explain it to them and try to convince your client, then you are chasing the wrong people/companies. If you truly want to brand through publicity and you understand your reason why, then you will understand the value in spending and investing.


Some of the media I have had the privilege of working with and have built relationships with are: Forbes Africa, Fast Company, Entrepreneur Magazine, Huffington Post, CNBC Africa, BBC London, GQ, Le Kap, just to name a few. Having worked across the broad with entrepreneurs in Property, Fashion Models, Sports individuals, Women in Tech, Philanthropists and Artists, it has given me the opportunity to expand, diversify and grow.


Part of growing and learning allowed me the privilege of attending the web summit in Lisbon in 2016. It was here that I was able to listen to some phenomenal talents from different spheres within the tech and media space. I had the privilege of seeing Gary Vaynerchuk live. The impact was tremendous! It confirmed for me, that it all comes down to documenting and story telling.


I am grateful for all the lessons and learning I have experienced but mostly I am grateful for being able to help entrepreneurs, my clients, to build from scratch, to assist them in raising their personal profiles through story telling and to help in building their brands through publicity. It is a beautiful thing to watch!
